"We had 28 engines starting in a 42 car Bush Series field” - Lloyd McCleary

Lloyd McCleary, owner and president of T and L Engine Development, is no stranger at the race track. Beginning in 1975, fresh out of high school, McCleary started work with a NASCAR Winston West team based out of Portland, Oregon. Quick to find success and gaining respect all along the West coast, McCleary was offered a position to work for the top dollar team run by Bill Schmitt. By 1979, his engines were dominating the elite Winston West Series, earning a series championship and the prestigious Golden Wrench award. In 1985, Reading California became the site of Pro Power. As owner, McCleary provided the horsepower that gave legendary driver Hershel McGriff his 1986 Winston West Series championship.
Winston Cup, NASCAR’s top series, became the focus of the 1990 racing season. McCleary relocated to North Carolina to become engine builder for long time friend Derrick Cope and the number 10 Purolator team. Two years later, Lloyd and wife Therese, created T and L Engine Development. T and L supplied engines for teams running series such as ARCA, Hooters Pro Cup, and other late model touring series, but the main focus was NASCAR. Supplying engines for over 60 teams competing within the three top NASCAR series (Craftsman Truck, Busch, and Winston Cup), McCleary once again was the horsepower of choice.

“I remember the Charlotte race in ‘97, there were 60 something cars at the track that weekend. "We had 28 engines starting in a 42 car Bush Series field” recalls McCleary. “Joe (Nemechek) got us to victory lane.”
T and L has had countless wins, pole positions, and even championships over the years with names like Nemechek, Fellows, Lepage, Spencer, Trickle, Skinner, and many others. McCleary has also been named engine builder of the race for numerous events. Today, McCleary and T and L Engines spend their time building and testing new engine packages for street, hot rod, and race vehicles.
